About Our Specialties

ABOUT PHYSIATRY

  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, also known as Physiatry, is a medical specialty concerned with the functional restoration of a person suffering from a physical disability, as well as with helping patients achieve a speedy recovery from surgery or traumatic injuries.
  • The philosophical concern of Physiatry is the return of the individual patient to optimal quality of life, which means not only addressing the specific symptoms, but educating the patient to maintain health and wellness following cessation of active treatment. In cases of chronic disability, the Physiatrist is well-equipped to return the patient to a fulfilled and productive life within the physical constraints of the disability.
  • The Physiatrist uses a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to treat the person as a whole, not just the specific disease, addressing lifestyle, environmental, and ergonomic concerns to guard against future re-occurrences and flare-ups of aches and pains.
  • The Physiatrist commonly works with team of Physical Therapists to treat the patient with a variety of therapeutic modalities such as electrical stimulation of the affected area, manual and machine-assisted massage, aquatic therapy, and restorative exercises.

ABOUT PHYSICAL THERAPY

  • Physical Therapy ("PT" is a health care specialty specifically concerned with treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system and their effects on physical movement.
  • Physical Therapy treatment can only be prescribed by a medical doctor (for example a Physiatrist) following a comprehensive medical evaluation.
  • Physical Therapists are licensed professionals who hold a graduate degree from an accredited institution.
  • The goals of Physical Therapy is to restore maximum function and pain-free range of motion to moving body parts (for example, knees, elbows, neck, lower back) following surgery or traumatic injury, as well as to help people with chronic musculoskeletal or neurological disabilities achieve a greater range of motion and live more active lives.
  • Modern Physical Therapy achieves these goals through a combination of manual modalities such as manual massage, manipulation, hot/cold packs and therapeutic exercises, together with technology-assisted modalities such as electrical stimulation of the injured area, mechanical massage devices, and aquatic massage.
  • Physical Therapists treat or help overcome a variety of types of conditions, including orthopedic (e.g. post-operative joint care, sports injuries, work-related trauma), geriatric (e.g. post-hip/joint-replacement, osteoporosis, arthritis, poor balance), and neurologica (e.g., cerebral palsy, ALS, post-stroke recovery).
  • Physical Therapy is a core services area at our office. Grand Central PM&R's Physical Therapy team includes practitioners with a multidisciplinary background, who are skilled in both manual PT techniques and the use of apparatus such as electrical stimulation machines.

ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC

  • Chiropractic is a fast-growing health care discipline that primarily focuses on disorders of the spine, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches (especially tension headaches).
  • Doctors of Chiropractic - often referred to as chiropractors - practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment, as well as dietary and lifestyle counseling.
  • Chiropractors may assess patients through clinical examination, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging and other diagnostic interventions to determine when chiropractic treatment is appropriate or when it is not appropriate.
  • In many cases, such as lower back pain, Chiropractic care may be the primary method of treatment. When other medical conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition.

  • The most common thrapeutic procedure performed by Chiropracotrs is known as "spinal manipulation," also called an "adjustment." The pupose of adjustment is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become restricted in their movement as a result of trauma, repetitive stress injury, or something as simple as poor posture.
  • Chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort. However, patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following treatment (as with some forms of exercise) that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours.

ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE

  • Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese technique of treating pain and some of the most common musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, respiratory, neurological, and emotional conditions, including weight control problems, gynecological issures, depression, and anxiety.
  • Acupuncture has been around for over 2,000 years and is one  of the oldest forms of medicine still practiced today.
  • By inserting fine needles, not much thicker than a strand of hair, into certain points on the body, the acupunture practitioner regulates and stimulates the body's natural energies into a state of balance.
  • Acupunture needles are pre-sterilized and disposable.
  • Acupuncture patients experience a mild pinprick sensation when the needle is inserted; this lasts for about one or two seconds. some people feel energized by the treatment, while others feel relaxed.
